Responsive Acoustic Ceiling

Designed at @LAB - Architextile Laboratory (Electronic textiles in architecture), NSCAD University 2011. I was responsible for electronics and programming.

The ceiling uses machine learning to continuously adapt its sonic properties relative to sounds in the space. Users can manually configure the ceiling for a variety of effects, such as sound absorption or reflection. While manually controlled, the ceiling listens to sounds in the room and learns to associate the position of the ceiling tiles with sonic conditions in the space. When set to responsive mode, the ceiling continously listens and decides on its own how to position the tiles.
